Uptime monitor vs project dashboard: which do you need?

An uptime monitor answers one question well. A project dashboard answers several. See which questions each covers and which setup fits your client sites.

Updated 6 min read

Two kinds of tools get compared as if they were alternatives. They answer different questions, and most people with several client sites end up wanting both kinds.

What does an uptime monitor answer?

One question, and it answers it well: is this page working right now? A monitor requests a page every few minutes, confirms a failure before alerting and tells you quickly, by a channel you will see. It is the right tool for catching outages.

What it does not tell you is why a site is down, what changed recently, when a domain renews, how traffic is moving or what the site costs.

What does a project dashboard answer?

Several questions about each project at once:

  • Is it healthy, and is the latest deploy live or did it fail?
  • Which certificates and domains are about to expire?
  • How is search traffic moving, and did something change after a release?
  • What does this project cost, and what does it earn?

It is built for the weekly look at everything, sorted by what needs attention.

Which setup fits which situation?

Your situationSuggested setup
One or two sites, checked dailyA monitor alone
Several client sites, outages are the main worryA monitor, plus a habit of checking renewals
Several clients, and renewals, deploys or costs slipA monitor and a project dashboard
A team sharing client sitesA dashboard with roles, plus a monitor
Clients who ask for public status pagesA tool that offers them, plus a dashboard for yourself

How do they work together?

The monitor wakes you when something breaks. The dashboard answers the follow-up questions: did a deploy go out, is a certificate involved, was this site already flagged last week. Neither replaces the other, and the overlap is small enough that running both is not wasteful.

What should I look for in each?

For a monitor, look at check intervals, how failures are confirmed, alert channels, whether the plan allows commercial use and whether certificate expiry is included. Our guide on setting up uptime monitoring for client websites lists the details.

For a dashboard, look at whether it organises by client, whether missing data is shown honestly and whether it reads the places you already use, such as your host, repository and Search Console.

Where Datumboard fits

Datumboard is a project dashboard that includes uptime checks and puts them beside deploys, renewals, search data and costs. It is in early access, and you can join the list below. See an UptimeRobot alternative for freelancers for a direct comparison with one monitoring service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an uptime monitor and a project dashboard?

An uptime monitor checks whether a page responds and alerts you when it does not. A project dashboard shows several kinds of information about each project together, such as health, deploys, renewals, search data and costs, so you see the whole situation instead of one signal.

Do I need both an uptime monitor and a project dashboard?

Often yes. The monitor provides fast, reliable checks and alerts. The dashboard provides the weekly overview and the context that explains a problem. If you look after only one or two sites, a monitor alone may be enough.

Which one should I set up first?

Start with uptime and certificate monitoring, because outages and expired certificates are the failures clients notice first. Add a dashboard when keeping track of deploys, renewals, search and costs across several clients starts to slip.
