Updated 4 min read
See when a domain registration ends, who the registrar is and what status it has. The checker reads the public registry record.
What does the domain expiry checker show?
- The expiration date and the days left. Under 15 days is marked due soon and a date in the past is marked expired.
- The registrar that holds the domain.
- When it was registered and when the record last changed.
- Status codes, such as
client transfer prohibited, which tell you about locks, and renewal or deletion stages when a domain has lapsed. - Name servers the domain points to.
Enter any address on the domain. The checker finds the registered domain, so www.example.com and example.com give the same answer.
Why can't I see an expiry date for some domains?
The checker uses RDAP, and the registry decides what to publish. Some country domains, including .de and .ch, confirm that a name is registered but do not publish when it expires. In that case the checker says so, and the date is in your registrar account. We would rather tell you the date is unavailable than show you a wrong one.
What do the status codes mean?
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
client transfer prohibited | The registrar has locked the domain against transfers. Normal and good |
client delete prohibited | The domain cannot be deleted by request |
autoRenewPeriod | The registration expired and the registrar renewed it automatically. A fee may follow |
redemptionPeriod | The domain lapsed and can be recovered, usually for a higher fee |
pendingDelete | The final stage. The domain will be released and cannot be restored |
If you see redemptionPeriod or pendingDelete, read how to recover an expired domain straight away.
How do I look up a domain from the command line?
curl -sL https://rdap.org/domain/example.com | jq '.events[] | select(.eventAction=="expiration")'
The eventDate field is the expiry date. The checker above does the same lookup and presents the registrar, status and name servers as well.
How do I stop a domain expiring unnoticed?
A single lookup only tells you about today. Track every client domain in one place, make sure renewal notices reach an inbox that is read and check that the card on file is current. Our guide on tracking domain and SSL expiry dates explains the process, and the SSL certificate expiry checker covers certificates.
Where Datumboard fits
Datumboard looks up the registry record for every domain behind the sites you add, shows the dates in one renewal calendar with your certificates and subscriptions, and warns you before they pass. When a registry does not publish a date, it shows Not available so you can enter it by hand. It is in early access, and you can join the list below.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out when a domain expires?
Enter the domain in the checker above. It asks the registry for the public registration record and shows the expiration date. You can also find it in the account at your registrar or through an RDAP lookup.
Why does the checker say it cannot show an expiry date for my domain?
Some registries do not publish expiry dates publicly. Several country domains, such as .de and .ch, confirm that a domain exists but withhold the date as a matter of policy. For those, the date is only visible in the registrar account.
Does the checker work for subdomains?
It looks up the registered domain behind the address, so entering www.example.com checks example.com. Subdomains are not registered separately and have no expiry date of their own.
Is RDAP the same as WHOIS?
RDAP is the modern replacement for WHOIS. It returns structured data over HTTPS, and this checker uses it. The expiration date is one of the events in the response.
